STYLE NOTES · SEPTEMBER 2026
A graphic tee with a chore jacket makes a useful early-fall pairing: one expressive layer, one practical outer layer, and trousers you already wear.

The signal: renewed attention to chore jackets and utility dressing.
The LouMark take: let the tee carry the personality; keep the outer layer simple.
The outfit: graphic long sleeve + open chore jacket + straight trousers.
Why this pairing belongs in the conversation
In a September 22 check of Google Trends for US web searches, “work jacket” appeared among the rising related queries for “chore jacket,” at +70% over the previous comparison period. The 12-month view also listed “men’s chore jacket” among rising related searches.
These are search-interest signals, not sales figures or proof that every workwear garment is surging. Broad “workwear” searches also mix occupational clothing with fashion, so the more specific jacket queries are more useful for this styling question.
The editorial picture supports exploring it: GQ’s September 15 fall wardrobe guide includes cotton plaid workshirts, substantial chinos and graphic tees. Our interpretation is simple: utility shapes can give expressive T-shirts a grounded setting.
Choose the jacket around the print
Start with an unlined or lightly structured chore jacket that has enough room through the arms. A tight sleeve can bunch a relaxed long-sleeve tee underneath, even when the chest fits. Try the layers together and bend your elbows before deciding on size.
Leave the jacket open so the central graphic remains readable. If the jacket already has contrasting pockets, large embroidery or a strong check, choose a quieter tee. If the tee has bold lettering and illustration, a plain jacket gives it space.
Length matters too. Aim for a tee hem that sits close to the jacket hem rather than hanging far below it. Use the garment measurements rather than assuming the same size label gives the same proportions across brands.
Three color combinations worth repeating

- Army green, navy and charcoal: wear the green tee under a navy jacket with charcoal trousers. The colors stay quiet while the print adds detail.
- Coffee, faded blue and ecru: combine a brown tee with blue jeans and a light jacket. This is a softer route into utility dressing.
- Black, tan and dark denim: a black tee anchors a tan chore jacket. Keep the denim simple so the graphic remains the focal point.
A LouMark starting point
The Dirty Hands, Clean Money Long-Sleeve Tee brings the workwear reference through its lettering, skull illustration and wrench accents. Its current product listing specifies 100% cotton, a garment-washed finish, a relaxed unisex fit and ribbed cuffs.
That makes it a styling option for casual utility outfits. The graphic does not make it protective work clothing; choose appropriate certified garments for an actual job-site requirement. For everyday wear, compare its measurements with a tee that already fits you well.
Keep the rest of the outfit easy
Before heading out, check the outfit both with the jacket open and with it removed. Choose straight trousers with enough room to balance the relaxed top. On a milder day, carry the jacket and let the long sleeve work on its own. When temperatures fall, add warmth through your outer layer rather than stacking two bulky sleeves.
For other combinations, our fall graphic-tee outfit guide covers the broader wardrobe. Here, the useful experiment is narrower: try one plain utility jacket over one expressive tee and see whether the proportions feel natural.
